Neem
Azadirachta indica · Sanskrit: Nimba
A bitter, cooling herb traditionally used for skin health and purification.
Neem is called ‘sarva roga nivarini’ in folk tradition — the healer of many ailments — and almost every part of the tree is used: leaves, bark, flowers, seed oil and twigs, which are still chewed as a natural toothbrush in rural India.
Its intensely bitter taste is cooling and drying, which is why Ayurveda uses it for Pitta and Kapha conditions of the skin and blood. Neem oil is applied externally to skin and scalp. Because it is strongly bitter and depleting, it is used briefly and with care internally.
