Ashwagandha

Withania somnifera · Sanskrit: Ashwagandha

A revered adaptogenic root traditionally used to support resilience to stress, restful sleep and vitality.

Ashwagandha is one of the most important rasayanas (rejuvenatives) of Ayurveda. The root is the part used, usually dried and powdered, and it is classically taken with warm milk and ghee, which are said to carry its nourishing action deep into the tissues.

Its sweet aftertaste (madhura vipaka) and heating potency make it grounding and strengthening — a typical choice in Vata conditions, during convalescence or for people who are depleted and overworked. Because it is heavy and heating, it is used carefully where there is high Pitta or congestion (ama).
